THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS By Booth Tarkington The writing is straight forward without any of the “literary adornment” of so many works of the period and as such was an absolute pleasure to read so much so that I read it in one sitting. In addition, it was and remains completely contemporary. Although written a hundred years ago, with regard to content and style, it could have been written yesterday. Having never read Tarkington I was in for quite a surprise reading the book. He adored The MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and the story it told. Welles felt this to be a tragedy as he believed Tarkington a very great writer who deserved to be taken more seriously. Times change, tastes change and today Tarkington has pretty much been reduced to a foot note with a following limited to required reading lists in college English classes. THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, considered his greatest work won Tarkington the first of two Pulitzer Prizes. the greatest living American Author and as important as Mark Twain. Although forgotten today, during his lifetime Tarkington was considered one of, if not. There is very little I need say about the book as THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS pretty much says it for itself. ![]()
